- Eighth Forum on the WTO and Shenzhen
Shenzhen, China – 19 October 2009
The Institute’s Executive Director, Andrew Stoler, delivered a speech
on the topic “Trade Protectionism and the WTO: A New Challenge under
the Global Financial Crisis” to participants at the Eight Forum on the

- Conference on Regional Integration in Asia and Europe
Sussex, United Kingdom – 14-15 September 2009
Executive Director Stoler addressed the Sussex conference on regional integration
in Asia and Europe on the topic of TBT and SPS provisions in regional trading
agreements (RTAs). The two-day conference, held at the University of Sussex,
was co-sponsored by the Centre for the Analysis of Regional Integration at
Sussex (CARIS) and the International Trade Department of the World Bank. Mr.
Stoler’s comments, available here,
are drawn from a larger study expected to be published by the World Bank as
part of a handbook for developing countries on RTA negotiations.

- Fulbright Symposium on the Australia-US FTA
Canberra, Australia – 24-25 August 2009
Andrew Stoler, the Institute’s Executive Director, addressed the symposium
in plenary session with a speech on the economic impact of the AUSFTA. The
2009 Fulbright Symposium on the US-Australia Free Trade Agreement: the last
five years, the next five years, brought together over 100 trade experts,
negotiators and academics from the United States and Australia for a discussion
of the full range of issues surrounding the Agreement’s operation and

- Symposium on WTO Litigation: Issues and Reforms
Sydney, Australia – 14 August 2009
Executive Director Stoler was a principal speaker in this day-long symposium
organized by the Law School of the University of Sydney. The symposium brought
together WTO experts from Australia, Japan and New Zealand for an exchange
on many of the key issues that have shaped the negotiation and litigation
environment at the WTO over the past decade. Andrew Stoler addressed the evolution
of subsidies disciplines in the GATT and the WTO. The paper which formed the
basis for his remarks can be found here.

- Governor's Leadership Foundation
Elizabeth, South Australia -31 March 2009
Executive Director Stoler participated in a program for participants in the
Governor's Leadership Foundation program on 31 March 2009 focusing on the
prospects for the South Australian Economy. Mr Stoler addressed the global
context in which the South Australian economy finds itself at a time of international
economic crisis. His speaking notes can be found here.
- Conference on Multilateralizing Regionalism
Canberra, Australia - 24 March 2009
The Executive Director addressed the international symposium on "Multilateralizing
Regionalism" organized by the University of Melbourne and ANU in Canberra
on 24 March 2009. In his comments,
he focussed on open regionalism in East Asia.

- Farm Foundation Round Table
Maui, Hawaii - 8-10 January 2009
The Institute’s Executive Director was a featured speaker at the semi-annual
Round Table meeting of the American Farm Foundation held in Maui, Hawaii.
Mr. Stoler addressed the group on the question of the Future of the Global
Trading System. A copy of his remarks can be found here.
Some 150 agricultural industry, academics and farmers took part in the three
days of meetings.

Paris, France - 3-4 November 2008
Jim Redden, Director of International Program for China and the Pacific presented
a paper on 'Perspectives on Trade, Growth and Poverty Reduction in the Asia-Pacific
Region at an OECD Policy Dialogue in Paris.

- APEC Trade Policy Dialogue
Adelaide, Australia - 22 April 2007 Andrew Stoler, Executive Director of the Institute, was a featured speaker at the SOM-II APEC Trade Policy Dialogue in Adelaide. In his comments, he discussed the legal, institutional and policy implications of a possible Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific (FTAAP).

Melbourne, Australia - 20 April 2007 At the annual conference of APEC Study Centres held in Melbourne, the Executive Director spoke of initiatives undertaken by China and its Asia-Pacific neighbours designed to facilitate adjustment to the rising influence of China in the Region.

Adelaide, Australia - 18 April 2007 Executive Director Stoler addressed the experts' workshop on the issue of the Implications of the MFN Rule in Agreements at the Bilateral and Regional Level.

Melbourne, Australia - 11-12 December 2006 Mr Stoler was a panel member in the conference session addressing ways in which APEC could contribute to improved trade liberalisation and presented a short paper on Raising Standards of Regional Liberalisation.

- Columbia University Conference on the WTO at Ten
New York City – 6 April 2006 The Institute’s Executive Director was a member of a panel examining the experience with the WTO dispute settlement system to date and suggesting ways in which the system might be improved in the light of experience. Mr Stoler’s remarks focussed on how the panel and appellate review process might be improved.

Shanghai, China – 24 March 2006 At a major conference of entrepreneurs organized by the Shanghai WTO Consultation Centre, the Institute’s Executive Director, Andrew Stoler, spoke on prospects for the Doha Round in the aftermath of the Hong Kong Ministerial Conference.

Arlington, Virginia, USA - 16 February 2006 The Institute's Executive Director addressed the annual Outlook Conference on the subject of the WTO's Doha Round and the U.S. Agriculture Agenda. More than 1600 participants registered for the annual Confernece in 2006 with approximately 350 persons in attendance at the session on Globalization and the World Trade Organization.

Adelaide and Melbourne - 16 & 17 February 2005 Speaking at the CEDA Conferences, Executive Director Stoler addressed Priorities for Australian Trade Initiatives in 2005. In his remarks, Mr Stoler emphasized the importance of comprehensive services trade coverage in a China-Australia FTA.

Adelaide - 22 April 2004 On 22 April 2004, the Executive Director appeared before the Australian Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on Treaties when it held a hearing in Adelaide. Earlier, the Executive Director made a written submission to the JSCOT on several aspects of the proposed FTA.
