"Eighth Forum on the WTO and Shenzhen"
Shenzhen, China
At the Eight Forum on the WTO and Shenzhen, the Institute’s Executive Director, Andrew Stoler, delivered a speech on the topic Trade Protectionism and the WTO: A New Challenge under the Global Financial Crisis. A copy of the speech is available here. Mr. Stoler, who has been a Senior Advisor to the Advisory Committee of the Shenzhen WTO Affairs Centre since 2003, was also re-appointed to this position for the 2010 – 2013 period.

"Regional Integration in Asia and Europe"
Sussex, United Kingdom

Executive Director Stoler addressed the Sussex conference on regional integration in Asia and Europe on the topic of TBT and SPS provisions in regional trading agreements (RTAs). The two-day conference, held at the University of Sussex, was co-sponsored by the Centre for the Analysis of Regional Integration at Sussex (CARIS) and the International Trade Department of the World Bank. Mr. Stoler’s comments, available here, are drawn from a larger study expected to be published by the World Bank as part of a handbook for developing countries on RTA negotiations.

“Fulbright Symposium on the Australia – US FTA”
Canberra, Australia
The Institute’s Executive Director, Andrew Stoler, addressed the annual Fulbright Symposium on the economic impact of the Australia-US Free Trade Agreement in the four years since its implementation. In his speech, a copy of which can be found here, Mr. Stoler indicated that while it is likely too early to definitively ascribe many developments in bilateral trade and investment to the implementation of the AUSFTA, it also seems clear that Australia’s exports to the USA performed better in the period since the FTA and that the trade diversion feared by some economists had not materialized. “Symposium on WTO Litigation: Issues and Reforms”
Sydney, Australia

Executive Director Stoler was a principal speaker in this day-long symposium organized by the Law School of the University of Sydney. The symposium brought together WTO experts from Australia, Japan and New Zealand for an exchange on many of the key issues that have shaped the negotiation and litigation environment at the WTO over the past decade. Andrew Stoler addressed the evolution of subsidies disciplines in the GATT and the WTO. The paper which formed the basis for his remarks can be found here.

"Farm Foundation Round Table Meeting"
Maui, Hawaii
The Institute’s Executive Director was a featured speaker at the semi-annual Round Table meeting of the American Farm Foundation held in Maui, Hawaii. Mr. Stoler addressed the group on the question of the Future of the Global Trading System. A copy of his remarks can be found here. Some 150 agricultural industry, academics and farmers took part in the three days of meetings.

“Alternative Frameworks for Agricultural Trade Negotiations”
Adelaide, Australia
As an element of its ongoing research project funded by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the Institute hosted an international conference on Alternative Frameworks for Agricultural Trade Negotiations in Adelaide on 11-12 December 2008. Conference participants heard researchers from India, China, Indonesia and Brazil present papers on the political economy of agricultural trade negotiations in their countries and the likely reactions of government officials to the possibility of “critical mass” or other alternative frameworks for agricultural trade negotiations. The Institute also presented summaries of contributions to the research project received from individual experts from around the world. A PowerPoint presentation described international opinion on key issues in agricultural trade negotiations (click here for a pdf file containing the presentation). Once the input papers are finalised, the results of the conference will be published by the project directors.

"Aid for Trade Policy Dialogue"
Paris, France
The Institute's Director for International Programs for China and the Pacific, Jim Redden, was recently invited to present a paper on 'Perspectives on Trade, Growth and Poverty Reduction in the Asia Pacific Region' at an OECD Policy Dialogue on 'Aid for Trade'. The powerpoint summary of the Institute's presentation can be found on the OECD website along with a number of other very useful inputs from, for example, Alan Winters (DFID), Bernard Hoekman (World Bank) and representatives from CUTS in India who were on the same panel with Jim Redden.

“The Future of Agriculture – A Global Dialogue Amongst Stakeholders”
Barcelona, Spain
The Institute’s Executive Director participated in this dialogue on the future of agriculture and the issues faced by farmers and governments at the invitation of the organizers of the meeting: the University of Barcelona and the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development. Among the topics covered in the conference were: the current state of WTO agriculture trade negotiations; trends and drivers of production and import demand for agricultural commodities; and, the impact of climate change issues on agricultural production and trade.

"Attorney General's International Trade Law Symposium"
Canberra, Australia
The Institute's Visiting WTO Fellow, Victoria Donaldson, addressed the Attorney General's International Trade Law Symposium on the subject of proliferating procedure in WTO dispute settlement. In her remarks, she suggests that the proliferation of ad hoc procedural issues argues for effective standardized rules that could contribute to saving time in the proceedings and guide members when they participate in disputes.

"Warwick Commission Symposium on the Future of the Trading System"
Melbourne, Australia
Executive Director Stoler addressed a Warwick Commission symposium on the future of the multilateral trading system on the need for negotiators to move away from the non-productive "single undertaking" approach to international trade negotiations and return to the more effective "critical mass" model of negotiations.

"eba Business and Sustainability Summit"
Sydney, Australia
Executive Director Andrew Stoler was one of six expert panellists featured at Environment Business Australia's annual Business and Sustainability Summit. In his comment, he focussed on how WTO Members are increasingly taking environmental concerns into account in crafting new rules for the trading system and the threat to international trade posed by recent protectionist moves disguised as environment-friendly measures such as the "food miles" initiative.

Andrew Stoler, Executive Director of the Institute, was a featured speaker at the SOM-II APEC Trade Policy Dialogue in Adelaide. In his comments, he discussed the legal, institutional and policy implications of a possible Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific (FTAAP).

Reshaping APEC for the Asian Pacific Century - Priorities and Strategies
Melbourne, Australia
The Institute's Executive Director, Andrew Stoler, participated as a speaker in this APEC Studies Centre Network Preliminary Conference for APEC 2007. Mr Stoler was a panel member in the conference session addressing ways in which APEC could contribute to improved trade liberalisation and presented a short paper on Raising Standards of Regional Liberalisation. Australia will host APEC in 2007 and the full conference to follow this day and a half session will be held in March 2007.

Conference on Regional Integration at the Crossroads
Santiago, Chile
The Institute contributed a paper on "Regionalism v. Multilateralism: a View from the Asia-Pacific Region" to the deliberations of this two-day international conference sponsored by the European Union, UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and OBREAL (Observatorio Relaciones UE-America Latina). The conference examined in detail the issue of whether regional trade agreements can contribute to international cooperation on other fronts and the complex relationship between the WTO systems and regional agreements.

Third ARTNeT Consultative Meeting of Policy Makers and Research Institutions
Macao, China
At the invitation of UNESCAP, the Institute participated in the Consultative Meeting where researchers and policy-makers exchanged views with a view to ensuring that future Asia-Pacific trade and economic research projects are demand-driven and practically useful to governments and the private sector. The Institute's Executive Director made a presentation to the conference on Trade Facilitation, Regional Integration and Logistics Liberalisation.

Second World Forum on China Studies

Executive Director Stoler was invited to participate in this major conference by the organizers, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. More than 500 experts from China and overseas attended the two-day conference. Mr Stoler presented a paper and delivered a speech to this major international conference on the topic of China's role in the WTO and the Doha Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations. APEC Australia 2007 Symposium

The Institute's Executive Director was a featured speaker at the Australia 2007 Symposium for APEC Member Economies held at the Sanctuary Cove resort in Queensland. Mr Stoler spoke on the subject of APEC's future role in trade and investment. More than 170 government officials and business representatives participated in the two-day symposium. Australia will chair APEC in 2007.

Inter-Pacific Bar Association Annual Conference
Sydney, Australia

Executive Director Stoler chaired the plenary session of the IPBA Annual Conference where discussion focussed on the increasingly important role played by free trade agreements in the region. He also participated in a panel discussion analysing the pros and cons of FTAs and the interface between FTAs and the WTO.

The Institute’s Executive Director was a member of a panel examining the experience with the WTO dispute settlement system to date and suggesting ways in which the system might be improved in the light of experience. Mr. Stoler’s remarks focussed on how the panel and appellate review process might be improved.

More than 1600 participants registered for the annual Conference in 2006 with approximately 350 persons in attendance at the session on Globalization and the World Trade Organization.
